Vintage Azrou Kilim Runner / 363 x 122 cm
This striking vintage kilim from the Azrou region, possibly woven by the Aït Oumalou, vibrates with optical energy and chromatic harmony. Its field is alive with sharp color contrasts, sunny yellow, deep indigo, emerald green, ruby red and bright white, grounded by hints of ochre, maroon and anchoring black. The interplay is bold, deliberate, and visually arresting, like sunlight refracted through stained glass.
The design unfolds in panel-like segments, each horizontal band forming a unique rhythm of diamond medallions, zigzags, checkerboard grids and linear symbols. A segment in the composition shows a red-striped band holding a powerful optical eye motif, a visual anchor pulsing with tribal intensity. Supplementary weft work brings texture and depth to select motifs, giving them a tactile presence that rises gently from the weave.
Bordered with geometric guard bands and eight-pointed star motifs and finished with very short clustered fringes, this piece carries the clarity and intensity of Amazigh design at its most refined. A kilim that both grounds and dazzles.
